Ohio governor visits Detroit auto show January 12, 2012
Ohio's governor hit the 2012 North American International Auto Show Thursday for his second tour in as many years and talks with executives at the Big Three automakers. This time, the governor is gearing up to help Chrysler and General Motors, along with Toledo assembly lines.
But Gov. John Kasich (R-Ohio) was like a kid in a candy store on the auto show floor, marveling at the gee-whiz factor at all of the "toys for big boys" on display.
"Think about what it takes to put one of these together and if you're a kid who was born to make things, how great it is to make them better and better and better," the governor told reporters as he looked at a next-generation engine on display. Read more...
State sets Race to the Top pace January 11, 2012
Despite a change of administration and decisions by some districts to abandon the effort, Ohio is on track to implement sweeping reforms to its public-school system, according to an initial assessment of $4 billion Race to the Top grants.
In first-year progress reports, the U.S. Department of Education was largely complimentary of the efforts made by the 11 states and District of Columbia to meet individually set goals for improving student and teacher performance.
The reports don’t rank or compare state efforts because their initiatives vary, but the assessments and comments of federal education officials suggest Ohio and Massachusetts lead the effort. Read more...
State tackles Medicaid costs January 10, 2012
Gov. John Kasich’s administration hopes to curb Medicaid spending by paying managed-care companies and health-care providers more for keeping patients healthy and less for services provided when they are sick.
Greg Moody, head of the Governor’s Office of Health Transformation, said Ohio taxpayers pay a lot for some of the nation’s highest rates of infant mortality, child obesity and breast-cancer deaths. Despite spending more for medical care than 36 other states, Ohio residents’ overall health ranks 42nd.
The goal, Moody said, is to improve the health of the more than 2 million poor and disabled Ohioans who rely on Medicaid for care and to save taxpayers money. Read more...
