HHS Calls For Health Professionals To Study 'LGBT Cultural Competency Curricula' January 5, 2012
The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) says it is taking action to better address the health care needs of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people, by encouraging, among other things, health profession training programs to "include LGBT cultural competency curricula."
In a statement on the HHS Web site listing "Recommended Actions to Improve the Health and Well-Being of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Communities," it states that "HHS will ensourage new and existing health profession training programs, including behavioral health (e.g., mental health, substance abuse, and HIV) programs, to include LGBT cultural competency curricula." The acronym stands for Patient Centered Outcomes Research Institute—a group of doctors, researchers, statisticians and patient advocates who will commission evidence-based research for the health care system. For a special interest group that pushed so hard to enact legislation that weighs on the rest of America, unions seem to be the largest group that want to avoid the very law they helped enact. In fact, according to Friday afternoon’s document dump, the vast majority of individuals receiving special treatment in this latest waiver boondoggle are union workers.
