Democrat Kent Conrad says he'll retire: big opportunity for GOP in Senate

Ron Paul keeps eye on 2012
White House bid
 USA TODAY

Texas Republicans are lining up to run for the Senate seat being vacated by Kay Bailey Hutchison, but one of them probably won't be libertarian Rep. Ron Paul.

Paul told
National Journal, however, that he's thinking about making another run for president in 2012.  Read More...

Mitch Daniels for President?

Politico reports today that Mitch Daniels has been holding a series of high level meetings with presidential-level donors and advisers who can help chart a path to the White House in 2012.

Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels has been holding a series of private dinners with top Republican business leaders, policy hands and donors from around the country since this spring, an indication that he’s thinking more seriously about a presidential bid than he publicly lets on.

The dinners, which take place at the governor’s mansion in Indianapolis, are meant to introduce Daniels to a class of GOP heavy-hitters who could both finance and advise a White House campaign. — Politico

A three-way pileup atop 2012 GOP presidential race
01/20/2011

Former Govs. Mike Huckabee (Ark.), Sarah Palin (Alaska) and Mitt Romney (Mass.) make up the top tier of the 2012 Republican presidential field, according to a new poll from the Washington Post and ABC News.

Huckabee took 21 percent of the vote while Palin received 19 percent and Romney 17 percent among Republicans and GOP-leaning independents. No other potential candidate made it into double digits, although former House Speaker Newt Gingrich received 9 percent and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie took 8 percent. The rest of the field received 3 percent or less support.  Read More...

Donald Trump 'seriously' considering running for president in 2012

October 5, 2010

Donald Trump said today he's "seriously" considering running for the presidency in 2012.

"For the first time in my life, I'm actually thinking about it [running for president]," Trump told Fox News Channel. He added, "I see what's going on with this country and it's never been worse. What's happening is a disgrace."

"The Apprentice" host cited what he called the "unfair" trade relationship between America and China and the administration's inability to utilize the country's top business talent in trade negotiations as his main reasons for mulling a run.  Read More...

President Michelle Bachmann?

Could Rep. Michelle Bachmann (R-MN) be considering a title change? According to ABC News, the Tea Party favorite is considering a run for “Mrs. President.”

ABC News reports:

ABC News has learned that Bachmann, R-Minn., also is seriously weighing whether to seek the Republican nomination for president in 2012.

A source close to the three-term congresswoman said Bachmann will travel to Iowa this month for multiple meetings to seek advice from political forces there and party elders close to the caucus process before coming to a final decision regarding a potential presidential run. Bachmann, a native of Waterloo, Iowa, also is set to deliver a keynote speech at an Iowans for Tax Relief PAC fundraiser Jan. 21 in Des Moines, Iowa.

According to ABC, this will be Bachmann’s third trip to Iowa in the last eight months — trips that could pay dividends when the early Iowa caucuses roll around.

And Bachmann‘s staff isn’t going out of its way to shoot down the rumors.

“Nothing is off the table,” Bachmann chief of staff Andy Parrish told ABC News when asked whether the Iowa trip signaled Bachmann’s intent to run for president. “The congresswoman is excited about her first trip to Iowa this year.”

The Quiet Contender
Tim Pawlenty isn’t in the spotlight, yet. But he could charm voters in 2012

January 18, 2011
As others kept their distance, Tim Pawlenty took a knee.
Click here for the article and audio clip.

It was late, and most undergraduates had long since left the auditorium at George Washington University, but a lone young man in a wheelchair remained. He waited patiently near the door, his shoulders twitching. Flocks of coeds fluttered by. Minutes passed. Then, as Pawlenty finished his last handshake with a clean-cut College Republican, he noticed the fellow at the exit and approached him.
The student struggled to ask a question. Pawlenty, an athletic 50 year-old, dropped to his side. Behind him were empty pizza boxes and trash cans; his aides were watching the clock. But the former Minnesota governor’s eyes stayed fixed upon the face of the young man, who haltingly asked him about the tragedy in Tucson.

“Our hearts and prayers go out to the people who had loved ones who were lost or injured,” Pawlenty replied softly. “We are still heartbroken over that.” Their conversation continued for a couple of minutes, touching on the personal and the political. Pawlenty remained perched on the carpet, his tie and jacket rumpled.  Read More...
